Astrology shines beauty on the ordinary
In today’s modern world rarely do we feel awe in small moments. The wonder and beauty of nature is lost in the busyness of life and the struggles we face each day. Life can feel like a grind and you start to question what it all means? What is the point? The reverence is gone and life can feel meaningless. Life is complex, it is challenging, and everyone has a range of experiences both good and bad through their lifetime. It can be very difficult to find meaning in it all, but there is. Each and every person has a unique destiny. Astrology works on the premise that all of life is connected, that there is cosmic sympathy. Each person’s destiny is interwoven in the fabric of consciousness and I think this in and of itself is incredible. As an astrologer you see this in real time. Watching the planetary cycles and living your life through them, allows you over time to really feel and experience the cosmic forces at play. I have heard Chris Brennan say many times that you have to have the experience of astrology to believe it. This is why several astrologers actually describe being skeptics of the discipline at first, and then through their research to prove it is invalid, find a wisdom and truth they cannot ignore.
For some people the stars are barely noticed, they don’t look up, there is no reverence. For others there is a constant awe of the magic of the Universe. When you begin to understand the complexity of the cosmos and the billions of years it has taken this planet to create and support life, nature in your eyes does become miraculous. When you study astrology and then witness it in action in your life, it also becomes miraculous. The precise movements of the planets in our solar system, which depend on the natural laws of physics and mathematics and which can be very accurately predicted can provide us with information about the past, present and future by relating the geometric patterns in the sky to the earthly events. When you see this in action, even simple events described so literally by the position of the planets at the time become absolutely fascinating. It is amazing to think that the exact picture of the sky, above the precise location, at the moment of your birth writes a destiny that will play out over time.
I feel that having a sense of this reverence can take away some of the pain during the difficult times. For example if you are having setbacks and struggles in your career despite working very hard and maintaining a positive attitude, you may be extremely frustrated and confused that none of your attitude and behaviour is paying off. In this example you may have Saturn transiting through your place of career in your natal chart bringing delays/restrictions/difficulties. Knowing this can bring you a sense of relief that it is not your fault and it is a cycle that will in fact end. It is a defined period of time in your destiny and the struggle may in the long term lead to success. It was going to happen, despite your best efforts, it was written in the stars. There is a sense of relaxation that comes with this knowledge and also helpful information to help you navigate through the many cycles of your life.
I know from personal experience and also hearing other astrologers’ stories that even when difficult circumstances arise, the wonder of actually seeing the astrology in action takes a lot of the pain away…you just think “wow!”. Believe me it doesn’t stop you swearing and wanting to pull your hair out…. but it does bring a sense of it all not being so personal, that it is not all your fault. In this day and age there has been so much focus on the law of attraction and often misuse of quantum physics to explain such a thing, that you feel so much guilt and angst when life is not going well. You start to think ‘I must not have been positive enough’, ‘I must have done something to attract this’, ‘I am not good enough’. Society makes us feel this way. Ancient astrology brings a different perspective, one in which despite having free will, some events in the future will be predetermined. The extent to which a person’s life is fated/predetermined is a large philosophical discussion which I will not enter into here, other than to say that different astrologers fall on different ends of the spectrum so it is important to find the astrologer that is right for you. Regardless of the spectrum fate is an important part of the Hellenistic astrology tradition. This is in contrast to modern astrology, which focuses more on the natal chart being representative of the native from a psychological point of view.
Astrology can really reveal a depth and purpose to your life that was hidden from your view. This can bring a greater appreciation and/or acceptance of your life and circumstances. It can also help you find the grace of reverence for your life and life and life in general. Living with this reverence does change you experience of each day. This is demonstrated powerfully by the astronauts who experience time in space. Alan Bean, the fourth person to walk on the moon, said “Since that time, I have not complained about the weather one single time. I’m glad there is weather. I’ve not complained about the traffic, I’m glad there’s people around…boy we’re lucky to be here. Why do people complain about the earth? We are living in the garden of Eden”.
Go out at night, gaze at the stars and just for a minute take in the wonder of the Universe. Your life is a miracle.
