My path to Hellenistic Astrology and the strong foundation this ancient tradition has given me later in life
I am sure people wonder why have I chosen to dedicate the rest of my life to ancient Hellenistic astrology. In fact, I have had many perplexed looks when I share my passion. Today, I am going to share my path to Hellenistic astrology and how it has changed my life. It has brought me a sense of not only peace, but also a strong foundation upon which I can trust. Through sharing this experience I hope it will help you decide if you would like to know more about your destiny from the ancient astrological perspective.
Many people decide they would like an astrology consultation to help them find meaning in their life. Finding the right astrologer for you is very important, as not only has astrology got many different specialty areas, there are also different methods and styles. You need to find the person that you feel will provide you with not only the information you desire but also the right support through the process. Astrology had been a part of my life for many years before I found Hellenistic astrology and discovered its true depth and meaning.
Through my love of nature, the stars have always been a part of my life. Astrology has always fascinated me and throughout my life I have had several readings/consultations. Honestly, each one was different and there were certain parts that resonated more than others. I remember the last reading I had with a modern astrologer very clearly. After this reading I felt quite unsettled as the astrologer had been talking about all the wonderful things that could be seen in my chart, however my physical world and situation did not reflect any of it. Where were all the challenges I had faced during my life and at that current time? My default thinking then kicked in with my mind saying “it must be me”, “I must be doing something wrong”, “I am not good enough”, “I need to work on being more perfect” etc. I am sure anyone with self-worth issues will relate. So I worked harder, on myself and in life. At this stage I was doing my veterinary acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine and I already had a strong spiritual practice to ensure I was always developing as a healer and being the best I could possibly be for all my patients and their owners. I wanted to learn more about the astrology after that reading, so that I could look into my own chart and understand more. I read a couple of modern astrology books for beginners but they just did not resonate for me. The content felt superficial and I could not see where the rationale for the interpretations had come from.
Some time went by. I continued to live in tune with the moon and Mercury retrograde cycles. Then the planets began to speak to me in a different way. I watched Stargazing Live one night on television, it was a special program bringing astronomers and astrophysicists together for a night to teach the general public the basics of observing the night sky. It was fantastic and ignited something in me. I started going out every night with my binoculars and being more specific in my night sky observations. My beautiful Mum could see my passion and bought me my beloved telescope for my birthday. All of a sudden astronomy, cosmology and astrophysics consumed me. I read books and listened to webinars and lectures online designed for people who do not have Physics degrees, but want to learn more about these topics. Physics had been my favourite subject at school and my elective in my first year of veterinary school had been astronomy and this interest had definitely been rekindled after years of focussing on veterinary medicine, equine surgery and traditional Chinese veterinary medicine.
Through my astronomy I learnt about the asteroids and I became curious to see if they too could be used in astrology. It was through this inquiry that l was led to Demetra George who pioneered the use of asteroids in astrology. Through Demetra’s work I was also introduced to Hellenistic astrology. I discovered immediately that in this ancient tradition, the primary house division system that was used was Whole Sign Houses. This was a different house system to the one used in all of my other readings/consultations. I applied it immediately to my natal chart and as a consequence every planet was now in a different house. There was a brief moment of shock and uncertainty because the chart you had known was completely different, however as I gazed down relief quickly came, as in an instant I could see my whole life on a page and it all suddenly made sense. Since that profound moment every day of my life has been filled with this ancient tradition…..I am hooked!
I studied with Demetra George and Chris Brennan, both leaders in the field who have an incredible depth of knowledge and experience. They both have such dedicated and thorough approaches to their exhaustive research, ancient text translation and revival of Hellenistic astrology, and this has been of great comfort to me in my studies. In the first half of my veterinary career I was an equine surgeon and senior lecturer and thus the rigorous academic approach used by both Demetra and Chris has completely resonated with me. Studying Hellenistic astrology has revealed a complex system in which all individual parts flow seamlessly together, one in which has a rationale determined by the sacred geometric patterns in the heavens above. The ancient astrologers were highly skilled individuals. Astronomers would never want to hear this today…. but astrology came before astronomy. In ancient times Mesopotamian astrologers made observations and reported directly to the Assyrian kings-the astrology practice of predicting omens became a way to predict the future, and the astrologers were then inspired to learn more about the movement of planets and thus then came astronomy. There were generations of astrologers who were also astronomers.
Diving into the depths of Hellenistic astrology has revealed a very strong foundation and rationale for the system. This foundation is not only reflected in my astrological knowledge but also in my life. I am comforted by the map of my destiny being so clear, the challenges I can see were meant to be there all along and this brings a sense of acceptance and peace. My love of astrology and astronomy is also evident in my natal chart with a change in career seen clearly in my Zodiacal Releasing time lord periods at this stage of my life. This has brought me confidence when those around me have not understood or approved of my new passion. It has provided a strong foundation on which I can live this later stage of life, following what is truly in my heart and soul.
