Asteroid Magic

Earlier this morning NASA’s DART mission successfully impacted the asteroid Dimorphos. The DART mission is testing whether this impact can shift the asteroid’s orbit by a small amount, and thus whether the same technique can be used to defend Earth from any future dangerous asteroid collisions. Many people are frightened of asteroids because of the risk of them colliding with Earth (as has happened in the past), but to me they are magical. Today with the asteroid theme front and centre in the media, I was inspired to reflect on my love of the asteroids and their magic in astrology. The asteroids, each and every one, are all very important in astronomy as they provide time capsules containing the building blocks of the solar system. In astrology the asteroids are also incredibly important and provide their own unique message through their placement in the sky at any given time. Not all astrologers use the asteroid placements in their interpretations. In fact, in Hellenistic Astrology neither the outer planets nor the asteroids are used at all, as they had not been discovered in those times. Even though I am a Hellenistic Astrologer, I do use the asteroids as part of my interpretations and they have also been an important part of my life and path to astrology.

In a sense, the asteroids guided me in the direction of pursuing astrology seriously as a career. Before studying astrology with the goal of becoming a professional astrologer, I had an astrology reading during which the astrologer talked about a Lilith placement in my natal chart. The discussion around Lilith and her significance was my favourite part of the reading. A few years later I was reading a lot about astronomy and one of my favourite solar system topics was that of the asteroids. When I was reading about them, it was like they were talking to me, guiding me. I decided to research whether they could be used in astrology as part of chart interpretation as I remembered how much I had loved learning about Lilith in that prior reading. This research lead me to Demetra George, who is a pioneer in the field of astrology and the asteroids. Demetra has become one of my most important teachers, her influence on my astrology is profound and I am so thankful to the asteroids for guiding me to her.

The first four asteroids to be discovered in the solar system were Ceres, Pallas, Juno and Vesta in that order. It would take another 40 years after Vesta’s discovery for more asteroids to be discovered, with the numbers now in the thousands. But those first four have a special significance, both in their place in the sky, and in the astrology chart. These asteroids, correspond with the feminine essence of life. The deities that they are named after are goddesses. These goddesses correspond to certain archetypal forces/patterns through their mythology. The special mythology of each particular asteroid goddess can be recognised in your life through the understanding of their placement in your natal chart.

Pallas is extremely significant for me personally. She is located in a very prominent position in the place of career in my natal chart. Pallas (also referred to as Pallas Athene) is the goddess of wisdom. She symbolises learning, creative intelligence and also healing powers amongst other things. My entire life has been dedicated to learning, being the best healer I can be through western and eastern medicine, understanding the mystery of the cosmos and the ancient wisdom of nature and the stars. A large part of this drive in me comes from Pallas. To understand this is a blessing, as my life has not been a conventional one, and has often been difficult. Knowing I have the strength of this archetype inside of me, keeps me going when challenges are presented. The wisdom of the asteroid goddesses is quite stunning when you observe it within lives and through world events. It is another reminder of “as above, so below” and how the natural order of the heavens is very relevant to the natural order of earthly events and the mystery of how our lives unfold.

Ceres is the goddess of agriculture and the earth mother, she symbolises the love and nurture of a mother. Juno is the goddess of marriage, she symbolises relationship and also justice through women’s rights. Vesta is the goddess of the hearth fire, she symbolises community.

As mentioned above there are many more asteroids in addition to the main four and they also provide very useful insight. I look at the four main asteroids in every natal chart. I also look at a range of other asteroids if a client chooses a consultation with a focus on the asteroids. The wisdom coming from the mythology related to the various asteroids and how that is represented through the human experience never ceases to amaze me. Working with the asteroids reminds me of the wonder of the cosmos and how much I love this work and learning about the ancient art of astrology every single day.
